The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, has spoken out strongly against the increasing cases of violence reported during the ongoing 2026 election campaigns.
In a press statement released today, 29th November 2025, Justice Byabakama expressed deep concern over the recent clashes involving candidates, their agents, supporters, and even security officers.
He condemned the “violent episodes of Friday, 28th November 2025,” calling the loss of life “unfortunate and regrettable,” and reminding the public that such chaos “does not add value to our democratic dispensation.”
Despite these incidents, the EC noted that the countrywide electoral process has been largely peaceful, with over 83,000 candidates competing for more than 45,000 positions from local councils to the presidency.
Following the violent clashes, the Commission has ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the root causes and ensure those responsible are held accountable under the law.
Justice Byabakama further appealed to all political actors candidates, agents, and supporters to maintain peace, operate within the law, and avoid sectarian language that spreads hate and sparks confrontation.
The EC also reminded security agencies to enforce electoral laws fairly and responsibly, using only measures that match the situation at hand.
Justice Byabakama concluded with a firm call:
“Let us safeguard the integrity of this election by upholding peace, respect, and the law.”
