On Friday, August 29th, Ugandan music icon Bebe Cool unveiled the music video for Hidden Agendas, one of the standout singles from his Break the Chains album, which first dropped in May.
The track, a melodious afrobeat number with infectious rhythm, quickly became a fan favorite — even though its Pidgin lyrics may obscure some of its deeper meanings for many listeners.
Directed by Garrick Williams the creative mind behind Motivation and Circumference the Hidden Agendas video brings clarity and emotional weight to the song’s narrative. It tells the story of a man (played by Bebe Cool himself) betrayed by his own friends after following them into dangerous depths.
The video opens with an elderly Bebe Cool recounting the tale to his grandchildren the tale being the very song. From there, we follow a younger Bebe Cool navigating life in the mines with his crew, moving on to office scenes involving shady paperwork, and ultimately facing arrest.
The betrayal is crystallized in a powerful moment: Bebe Cool, being led away by police, casting a knowing, heartbroken glance at his friends.
But what truly sets this music video apart is its cinematic ambition particularly in its casting.
Instead of the usual lineup of models, Hidden Agendas leans into professional talent from Uganda’s film industry. Casting agent and talent scout Kasule Douglas Benda assembled a strong lineup, including actors Angel Toni Acer, Christiano Okitwi, and Crispus Ogwal. Toni, known for his role opposite Cindy Sanyu in the TV drama Crossroads, continues to grow as both actor and producer. Okitwi, meanwhile, gained attention for his controversial MTN ad appearance.
The production also brought on board renowned makeup artist Esther Nakaziba, the visionary behind the Karakta Makeup and Costume Festival, further bridging the gap between Uganda’s music and film worlds.
Hidden Agendas marks the third visual release from Bebe Cool’s Break the Chains album, and it’s clear that this isn’t just another music video. It’s a deliberate artistic leap one that merges music and storytelling into a cohesive, cinematic experience.
More than just a song, Hidden Agendas is a statement. It highlights a growing synergy between Uganda’s music and film industries, offering a glimpse into the future of how stories might be told — not just through lyrics, but through the lens of film.
