The State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, has finally spoken out after shocking allegations surfaced on social media accusing renowned businessman Karim Hirji of mistreating and abusing children who were placed under his care years ago.

The claims were made by Ramesh, a Ugandan TikToker who identifies himself as the son of the late Mzee Ramesh Narundas Ruperelia.

In a viral video circulating on TikTok, WhatsApp, X, and Facebook, he accuses Hirji of abusing him and his siblings after the death of their parents claims that have since caused a storm online.

In a long statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Minister Balaam said he was deeply concerned by the video, especially because both his name and that of his “long-time friend and business mentor” were mentioned.

Balaam revealed that he has known the four siblings Rina, Oboma, Ramesh, and Amina since the mid-90s and confirmed that their upbringing was entrusted to Hirji and his late wife Cham after their father passed away in 1996.

According to Balaam, the tycoon cared for the children “as a true parent,” paying their school fees, supporting them financially, and even helping them start life as adults with capital and cars.

“At no point has he ever discriminated against any of them. These allegations are extremely serious especially when directed at a guardian who stepped in when they needed support the most,” Balaam said.

He also noted that Hirji still supports some of the children’s own kids, whom he considers his grandchildren.

The minister made it clear that no formal complaint has ever been filed with his office or any child protection agency regarding the alleged misconduct.

“None of the now-grown men and women has ever approached my office to report any complaint against Mr. Hirji,” he stated.

Balaam announced that he will soon hold a meeting with all parties involved to hear their accounts. Depending on the outcome, a formal investigation may be launched.

He advised the siblings to stop addressing their grievances via social media.

“Do not use social media to blackmail your guardian. Bring your concerns to us and we shall address them with care, love, transparency, and respect.”,he cautioned.

While praising Hirji for his decades of support, Balaam emphasized that no one is untouchable, and the truth must be established.

He concluded by expressing hope for reconciliation within the family.

Karim Hirji is one of Uganda’s wealthiest businessmen, with an estimated net worth of US$800 million.
