Dr. Abed Bwanika, the Member of Parliament for Kimanya-Kabonera in Masaka City, has announced his intention to officially leave the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the coming months.
Elected under the NUP banner in 2021, Abed Bwanika has grown increasingly dissatisfied with the party leadership, particularly its stance on homosexuality.
He has voiced his opposition publicly, stating that his values no longer align with those of the party.

“I’ve been outspoken about my disagreements with NUP leadership, and it’s become clear that we no longer share the same principles. The party’s acceptance of homosexuality is something I cannot support, and it’s time for me to move on.”,he remarked.
Abed Bwanika’s decision to part ways with NUP comes as he expresses doubts about the party’s prospects in the 2026 elections. He believes NUP has lost its direction and is unlikely to make any significant strides in the upcoming race.
“The party has veered off course, and I don’t foresee any major success in the next election,” he stated.

The MP is currently engaging with his constituents in Masaka to determine his next political move but has ruled out joining the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).As Bwanika looks ahead, he will face competition from other candidates seeking.
However, he remains confident in his ability to earn the continued support of his electorate.
“My focus remains on serving my people and advocating for their best interests, no matter which party I align with,” Bwanika concluded.
