Mukono Municipality MP, Hon. Betty Nambooze, has predicted significant changes within the General Court Martial once the case involving Dr. Kiiza Besigye is concluded.

She stated that the court, which has previously handled mainly local cases, will undergo a major shift due to the high-profile nature of Besigye’s case.

Nambooze pointed out that the attention this case has attracted both nationally and internationally will likely result in a shake-up within the court system.

The court, which has typically dealt with smaller, local matters, is now in the spotlight due to the gravity of the charges against Besigye.

She also highlighted that neighboring Kenya is facing pressure to explain the circumstances surrounding Besigye’s recent abduction. The Kenyan government, she noted, is under scrutiny, as it struggles to clarify the incident.

“The General Court Martial will not remain the same after this Kizza Besigye case,”Nambooze said.

“They have been handling local cases, but now they are dealing with something that has gained international attention. The way Besigye was handled in Kenya has put the Kenyan government in a tight spot. They don’t even know how to explain what happened.”,she added

Besigye is facing charges related to unlawful possession of arms and alleged plans to cause unrest in Uganda. He is also accused of collaborating with foreign agents.

The former presidential candidate was controversially arrested in Kenya last month and has since spent several weeks in Luzira Prison.

Besigye has applied for bail at the Court Martial, but his request was denied, and he remains remanded in Luzira until December 10.
