Former Government spokesperson and longtime NRM supporter Ofwono Opondo has officially been declared elected unopposed as the Member of Parliament representing Older Persons in the Eastern Region.
This follows the withdrawal of his only rival Mpande Joram Kigenyi of the Democratic Party, who conceded to a petition challenging his nomination.

The declaration was confirmed by Returning Officer Richard Nsuube on November 7, 2025, indicating that Opondo was the only candidate in the race as guided under Section 37 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
This victory automatically positions Opondo as the NRM flagbearer and the incoming MP for Older Persons from Eastern Uganda one of the special interest groups represented in Parliament, alongside youth, workers, PWDs, and others.
Opondo, who is well known as the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre and Government Spokesperson, recently stepped back from his media role to fully engage in politics. He has also been a familiar face on political shows like NBS Frontline and Capital Gang.

During his campaign, he presented a seven-point manifesto focusing on improving the welfare and rights of older persons including better healthcare access, stronger social security, and more community involvement.
With no competitor left in the race, Opondo now heads to the 12th Parliament fully assured of his seat.
His upcoming term will be closely watched to see how his media experience and outspoken nature translate into real change for older Ugandans.
