Former Inspector General of Government (IGG) Beti Kamya has spoken publicly for the first time since leaving office, saying she plans to take a break and seek divine direction before deciding on her next move.

President Yoweri Museveni recently replaced Kamya with Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala after her four-year tenure as the country’s anti-corruption ombudsman came to an end.

Speaking about her transition, Kamya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and shared her immediate plans.

“For now, I just want to enjoy my family; that is my plan. Then I will pray to God.
When we pray, God speaks to us and He plans for us.”,she said .

Kamya thanked both God and President Museveni for what she described as a fulfilling phase of service.

“Now that I have completed this four-year phase that God gave me as IGG, I am very grateful. I also appreciate President Yoweri Museveni for trusting me with the opportunity to serve first as a minister, and later as IGG. These experiences have broadened my understanding of national issues,” she said.

A former opposition politician and outspoken critic of President Museveni, Kamya joined the ruling NRM government in June 2016 when she was appointed Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs. Her tenure was marked by efforts to reform city governance, often stirring debate and controversy.

In July 2021, she was appointed IGG, taking on the high-profile task of leading Uganda’s fight against corruption—a demanding role that she says tested but also fulfilled her.

“I have had a great, challenging four years, but by the grace of God, I have come out happy,” she reflected.

Looking back on her time at the Inspectorate, Kamya pointed out limited resources as the biggest obstacle to the institution’s effectiveness.

“Every job has its challenges, and the IGG’s office is no exception. But I think the greatest challenge is being under-resourced. The institution needs adequate funding to meet its expectations,” she emphasized.

While speculation about her political future continues, Kamya said she has no immediate plans to seek an elective position.

As she steps away from public office, Kamya says her focus remains on faith, family, and reflection awaiting guidance on what lies ahead
