Nakisunga Leaders Partner with Abigail Foundation to Support Children with Disabilities

Leaders in Nakisunga Sub-county -Mukono District have joined forces with Abigail Foundation Uganda to identify and support children with disabilities within their communities.

The collaboration brought together sub-county officials, parish chiefs, social workers, and community leaders in a united effort to promote inclusion and equal opportunity for all children.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Kyegombe Esterico, the Community Development Officer (CDO), and other local leaders, who pledged to work closely with Abigail Foundation to ensure that children with disabilities are recognized and supported.

Hon. Kazungu Johnson Ssalongo, Councilor for People with Disabilities and Acting Chairperson of Nakisunga Sub-county, praised the foundation’s arrival in the area, describing it as a “center of hope” for children with disabilities in Mukono District.

“Mukono South Constituency has lacked such opportunities for a long time,” Hon. Kazungu said, noting that the foundation fills a critical gap in disability support services.

He revealed that Abigail Foundation’s new home will be located in Namakwa, where construction of a school for children with disabilities is expected to begin soon. The foundation also plans to host a Family Support Week in December to engage parents and caretakers in various activities and services.

Hon. Kazungu encouraged parents to take advantage of the opportunity, stressing that “disability is not a curse from God, but a divine purpose.” He pledged continued collaboration with Abigail Foundation and local leaders to ensure that children with disabilities access education and essential services.

Hon. Mubarak Ssekikubo, Nakisunga Sub-county Chairperson and aspiring Member of Parliament for Mukono South Constituency, commended the foundation’s work and called for community vigilance in protecting children with disabilities.

“These children face challenges such as torture, neglect, and sexual abuse. Let us identify them and direct them to places where they can receive education, food, and shelter through foundations like Abigail. Every community member has a role to play  please report any case involving a child with a disability to the GISO.”,he said .

Abigail Foundation’s programs promote family and community involvement as key to inclusion. The organization conducts community outreaches, vocational training, and workshops aimed at empowering caretakers with knowledge and practical skills to combat stigma and isolation. Caretakers also receive entrepreneurship training — including soap making, tailoring, and knitting  to help them earn sustainable incomes.

Mr. Kyegombe Esterico, the CDO for Nakisunga Sub-county, applauded the foundation’s efforts and urged communities to support the cause.

“Disability can cause family stress and isolation if not handled with understanding and unity.Together, we can create an inclusive community where every child  regardless of ability feels valued and supported.”he said

He also welcomed partnerships with government programs and NGOs, noting that Nakisunga Sub-county has committed leaders ready to work toward inclusive community development.

Ms. Esther Angwenyo, Administrator of Abigail Foundation, said the organization currently supports 165 children  145 in the community and 60 at its center. Services offered include physiotherapy, special needs education, healthcare, vocational training, family support, community outreach, and occupational therapy.

The engagement ended with a renewed commitment from local leaders to continue working with Abigail Foundation Uganda to identify, empower, and transform the lives of children with disabilities across Nakisunga Sub-county and beyond.
