In a significant political shift ahead of the 2026 general elections, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has dropped incumbent Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana from its list of parliamentary candidates. The party has instead endorsed Zahara Luyirika, the current KCCA Speaker, marking a move that is both strategic and symbolic.

Luyirika, who had initially expressed interest in contesting for the Kampala Woman MP seat, was chosen following what party officials described as a “careful assessment” of her leadership credentials and the constituency’s evolving needs.

According to party insiders, Luyirika is viewed as a disciplined and energetic leader with strong grassroots support, particularly among youth and women. Her background in civic leadership is seen as an asset that could help NUP maintain and even strengthen its influence in Makindye West.

Ssewanyana, who is currently serving as MP, has been entangled in prolonged legal issues casting doubts on his capacity to serve effectively.

NUP leadership cited the need for dependable and uninterrupted representation as a key factor in the decision.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters of Luyirika have welcomed her candidacy, describing her as a fresh and capable voice who could bring renewed energy to the constituency. However, some loyalists have expressed concern over the exclusion of other long-time NUP figures in the area who were close allies of Ssewanyana.

Political analysts interpret the decision as part of NUP’s broader strategy to nurture new leadership while managing transitions in constituencies where incumbents face legal or political challenges.

With her endorsement now official, attention shifts to whether Zahara Luyirika can unify the constituency and uphold NUP’s stronghold in Makindye West one of its most dependable support bases in Kampala.
