Veteran Ugandan musician Moses Ssali, popularly known as Bebe Cool, is facing mounting criticism over allegations that he is protecting artists accused of criminal behavior.
A major figure in Uganda’s music scene and the head of the Gagamel crew, Bebe Cool has long been praised for his role in shaping the local music industry and influencing youth culture. However, recent claims suggest that his associations with certain controversial artists are raising red flags among the public.
Several commentators allege that some musicians facing criminal accusations have sought refuge under Bebe Cool’s wing, allowing them to sidestep legal consequences. Critics argue that this perceived protection is encouraging criminal elements to operate within music circles, threatening public safety and undermining law enforcement efforts.
On Tuesday, a group of concerned citizens issued a public appeal, calling on Bebe Cool to distance himself from what they termed a “new wave of criminal artists.”
The group further warned that continued association with such individuals could not only harm Bebe’s legacy but also endanger ordinary Ugandans.
“Bebe Cool has inspired many through music, but aligning with criminal elements could undo years of positive influence,” the group said in a statement.
The allegations come amid growing scrutiny of Uganda’s entertainment industry, with calls for increased accountability to ensure that music platforms are not exploited as cover for illicit activities.
As of now, Bebe has not released an official response to the accusations. We will provide updates as the story develops.
