John Katumba, who rose to national prominence as Uganda’s youngest-ever presidential candidate in 2021, has officially declared his intention to run again in the 2026 elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Kampala, the now more experienced Katumba expressed renewed confidence in his vision for Uganda, citing valuable insights gained from his first campaign. He framed his return as a symbol of resilience and a call for unity among opposition forces.
“I now carry the courage, wisdom, and strength to serve this country,I urge all opposition groups to unite behind this cause. Katumba Oyee!”Katumba said.
His appeal comes amid persistent divisions within Uganda’s opposition a challenge that has historically weakened efforts to contest the long-ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Katumba placed a special emphasis on mobilizing Uganda’s youth, who make up the majority of the population. He warned against the exploitation of young people by entrenched political interests and stressed the importance of peaceful civic engagement.

“I urge young Ugandans not to be tools of violence, but agents of transformation, the time has come to end oppression and ignite hope.”,he said.
Addressing concerns over political violence and state repression, Katumba also called on Uganda’s security forces to maintain neutrality during the election period.
He challenged the Inspector General of Police to ensure accountability for officers involved in abuse or harassment of opposition supporters.
