Uganda’s political scene saw a major development today as Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, former Leader of the Opposition (LOP), officially launched a new political party the Democratic Front (DF).

The launch, held in Kampala, marks the rebranding and formal registration of the party, previously known as the Green Partisan Party.

The Electoral Commission approved the party’s name change on May 6, 2025, issuing a Certificate of Registration under Section 6(1) of the Political Parties and Organizations Act (Cap 178).

This certification confirms the Democratic Front’s legal recognition and full compliance with Uganda’s laws governing political parties.

In his address, Mpuuga described the Democratic Front as “a home for logical thinkers, progressive minds, and those who believe in political ethics and disciplined service delivery.”

He stressed the party’s focus on principled leadership and reform-oriented governance.

The launch attracted several prominent Members of Parliament, including Abed Bwanika, Michael Kakembo, and Juliet Nakabuye all formerly with the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Their presence signals growing support for the Democratic Front among Uganda’s opposition ranks.

Mathias Mpuuga, who also served as NUP’s Deputy President for the Central Region, clarified that the new party is not a reactionary split but a proactive effort to build a more inclusive, ethical, and visionary political movement.

With the 2026 general elections approaching, the Democratic Front is expected to significantly influence Uganda’s political dynamics especially in the central region, where Mpuuga holds strong grassroots support.

As political alliances shift and voters seek alternatives, the Democratic Front enters the arena as a serious contender, offering a new voice in Uganda’s evolving political narrative.
