The Electoral Commission(EC) has officially gazetted Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as the Member of Parliament-elect for Kawempe North, ending a period of 11 days of uncertainty within the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP).

This development follows the publication of his victory in the Uganda Gazette on March 24, 2025, confirming his win in the recent parliamentary by-election.

Nalukoola emerged as the leading candidate with 17,939 votes, defeating Faridah Nambi of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who received 9,058 votes. Nambi’s tally was later revised from an initial figure of 8,593 votes reported on March 13.

The official gazette publication now clears the path for Nalukoola’s swearing-in and formal entry into Parliament.

The delay in the gazetting process had caused significant uncertainty, with Nalukoola even threatening to take action at the Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) for an explanation.

His concerns were addressed after a meeting with the Electoral Commission, which confirmed that his details had been submitted to UPPC for publication.

In the lead-up to the gazetting, he had also called for the withdrawal of Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers from Kawempe North, accusing them of interference and intimidation during the election.

With the publication now official, Nalukoola’s victory has been fully recognized, marking an important step toward his formalization as the new MP for Kawempe North.

Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama has now officially concluded the electoral process, with the final results of the by-election published in the Gazette.
