Balaam Barugahara, Uganda’s State Minister for Youth, has called for an urgent forensic investigation into the suspected abduction of Charles Bukenya, also known as Muvawala, who serves as Vice President of the Uganda National Non-Governmental Organisations Association (UNNA) and as a mobilizer for the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Muvawala reappeared on Friday, claiming that he had been kidnapped and tortured for hours before being dumped in a swamp in Buliisa District.

The news of his disappearance first surfaced on Wednesday, sparking widespread speculation that security forces may have been involved.

Despite efforts by his family to locate him, Muvawala remained missing, and an official statement from Defence and Military spokesperson Felix Kulayigye rejected the claims of abduction, labeling them baseless and unsupported by evidence.

In response to the controversy, Minister Balaam Barugahara took to his X platform, demanding a thorough investigation by security agencies to restore public confidence.

“Such disturbing allegations must be addressed without delay. If they are true, this would severely damage our government’s credibility and erode public trust. Those responsible must be held accountable,” Balaam Barugahara stated.

He also called for a detailed forensic inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

Balaam expressed concerns over the possibility that the abduction claims could be self-inflicted, denouncing any attempt at self-kidnapping and stressing the importance of maintaining the nation’s integrity and peaceful image.

“I trust the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) will ensure every avenue is explored to uncover the truth,” he remarked.

Robert Kyagulanyi, the President of the National Unity Platform, confirmed Muvawala’s release on his X platform, revealing that the victim was deeply traumatized by his ordeal.

Kyagulanyi alsoshared the details of a phone call with Muvawala, who confirmed he had been abducted on Wednesday morning and later abandoned in a Buliisa swamp. He further reported having endured significant torture at the hands of his captors, leaving him visibly shaken.

Kyagulanyi called for a united front against the growing lawlessness in the country, emphasizing the need for collective action.

The allegations have prompted widespread concern, with both government and opposition leaders urging a full investigation and accountability for those responsible.
