The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda and NRM Second Vice Chairperson (Female), Rt. Hon. Anita Among, has survived a tragic road accident that occurred in Mukono District on Saturday evening.
According to Chris Obore, the Director of Communication and Public Affairs at Parliament, the accident happened along the Kampala–Jinja highway as the Speaker was returning to Kampala from Bugweri, where she had been campaigning for NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Preliminary reports indicate that a trailer heading towards Jinja nearly rammed into Speaker’s official vehicle after several vehicles in her convoy had passed. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the Speaker’s driver moved to the edge of the road, minimizing the impact.
Fortunately, both Speaker Among and other passengers escaped without life-threatening injuries. Security officers and first responders quickly arrived at the scene and ensured all passengers received prompt medical attention.
Police in Mukono have since detained Lubega Ivan (32), the trailer driver, and Waiswa Amis, the co-driver, to assist with ongoing investigations.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as further details about the incident are being gathered.
