Legendary singer Mesach Semakula has praised fellow star Jose Chameleone for playing a big role in transforming the Ugandan music industry.

While speaking in a recent interview, Mesach revealed that before Chameleone came onto the scene, most band musicians focused mainly on singing deep message songs, but they didn’t have that energetic style that makes crowds dance.

Mesach Semakula says everything changed when Chameleone released his hit song Mama Mia, which brought a new vibe that took over the music scene.

“I was with Geoffrey Lutaaya at a show when Chameleone climbed the stage. It was even raining but the crowd was uncontrollable. Lutaaya looked at me and said, ‘This man will take over the industry.’ He came with a style that we had never seen,” Mesach narrated.

Mesach explained that Chameleone mixed meaningful lyrics with a danceable beat, plus adding Kiswahili flavor, which made his music loved both in Uganda and across East Africa. This new style forced many band artists to adjust and improve their sound.

Around the same time, producer Eddy Yawe also introduced a modern music studio setup, which helped band musicians experiment with new sounds. Mesach says they tested the new style on Haruna Mubiru’s song Ekitooke Kiffa Nsalira and it became a big success.

Mesach Semakula says this marked the beginning of a new era in Ugandan music that is still being felt today.
