Ugandan singer Viola Nakitende has officially announced her conversion to Islam, a decision that has taken many fans by surprise. The singer revealed that she has adopted the name ‘Nahya’ to symbolize her new spiritual journey.
Speaking during a TV interview, Nakitende expressed deep pride and peace with her decision, saying she has always felt close to the Islamic faith.
She explained that throughout her life, she has been surrounded by Muslims — from her mother to her paternal aunties, all of whom practiced Islam.
“I grew up around Muslims. In my O-Level, I stayed with my mother, and she was Muslim. All my paternal aunties are Muslim and married Muslim men,” Nakitende shared.
Her bond with Islam grew even stronger during her music career after meeting her manager Kitonsa, a committed Muslim. While traveling for performances, Nakitende noticed that Kitonsa and his team always prioritized Swalla (prayers), no matter the situation.
According to her, every time they prayed for something specific, it always came true a sign she interpreted as the power and truth of Islamic faith.
Kitonsa also confirmed her decision:
“Every time she saw us stop for Swalla, she’d ask God to bless our journey. When things always went well, she believed prayers truly worked. She had talked about converting for long, and now she has confessed with her mouth. In Islam, we do not force people”.
He sealed the moment by gifting Nakitende a prayer mat to welcome her into the faith.
