In response to the conflicting reports surrounding an incident involving Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, the Ugandan police have issued a statement addressing the circumstances of his injury in Bulindo, Kira Municipality.
On September 3, 2024, Bobi Wine attended a Thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Wakiso District, at the invitation of his lawyer, George Musisi. According to the police, the event concluded without incident. However, tension arose when Bobi Wine and his team left the venue and attempted to lead a procession through Bulindo town, which police officers advised against due to concerns about public safety and road closures.
Despite the police’s warnings, Bobi Wine insisted on continuing the procession, prompting police intervention. It was during this altercation that the National Unity Platform leader sustained an injury. The police, in their official statement, have disputed allegations that Bobi Wine was shot, instead claiming that he stumbled while attempting to get into his vehicle, resulting in his injury.
“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot,” the police statement read.
Bobi Wine and his team, however, maintain that he was shot by the police during the confrontation. He was quickly taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo, where he received first aid for his injuries.
The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to establish the facts surrounding the incident. “The police will investigate the alleged shooting and any related incidents,” they added.
