As chaos ensued, residents hurried to siphon fuel from the overturned tanker, unaware of the imminent danger. Tragically, the tanker caught fire, with those closest being burned beyond recognition.
“Unfortunately, those who rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker were the most affected,” Onyango stated. Among the victims were nine adults and two minors, all of whom perished at the scene.
In addition to the loss of life, the fire destroyed four buildings containing nine shops, along with property worth millions of shillings. Several injured individuals were transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Authorities remain at the site conducting investigations to determine the exact number of injured victims. Onyango reminded the public of the serious risks associated with fuel tanker accidents and urged caution when handling hazardous materials.
