Former National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer Mathias Walukagga has spoken out on his decision to support independent candidate Emmanuel Magoola Matovu in the hotly contested Busiro East parliamentary race, a move that has stirred debate within opposition ranks.
Walukagga’s endorsement comes at a time when NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has maintained that the party will only back candidates officially endorsed under the NUP “Umbrella” symbol.
The development follows Walukagga’s recent legal setback after the High Court upheld the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify him from the race.
Court ruled that his nomination papers were incomplete, effectively ending his bid to contest in the 2026 elections.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Walukagga said his decision to back Magoola was personal and driven by what he believes is best for the people of Busiro East.
“I have chosen to support Magoola because I believe he has what it takes to serve our people and push their issues forward,” He said during a press conference where he officially endorsed Magoola.
He described Magoola as a capable and focused leader who understands the challenges facing Busiro East and has the energy to represent residents effectively in Parliament.
However, the endorsement has put his at odds with the official NUP position.
Senior party officials have since distanced themselves from any form of cooperation with candidates running as independents, insisting that only those carrying the party ticket will receive support.
The move has reignited discussions around party discipline, loyalty, and how NUP handles internal disagreements, especially as the 2026 elections draw closer.
