Celebrated Ugandan Singer Moses Ssali alias Bebe Cool, has advised fellow musician Priscilla Zawedde, aka Azawi, to avoid making political statements, suggesting that doing so could harm her growing music career.
In a recent statement while unleasing his 2024 song list , Bebe Cool praised Swangz Avenue, the label behind Azawi’s success, for nurturing her talent and applauded the artist for consistently delivering exceptional music to her fans.
“Swangz Avenue deserves credit for nurturing her talent, and Azawi herself deserves praise for consistently serving her fans with great music,” Bebe Cool said.
While he acknowledged that fashion might not be her strongest suit, he emphasized that her musical talent more than compensated for it. “Congratulations, Azawi,” he added.
However, despite his praise, the Gagamel International boss cautioned Azawi to avoid political commentary unless she plans to switch from music to politics altogether.
“Advice: Stay away from political statements unless you plan to stop making music and join politics. I am the best example of what could happen,” Bebe Cool stated.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Bebe Cool explained that political involvement can take a heavy toll on an artist’s career, leading to a divided fan base and immense pressure.
“The burden becomes so heavy that it will require your physical, mental, and financial strength to stay in the industry, especially when your fans start splitting into factions,” he added.
Bebe Cool’s comments come after Azawi’s outspoken criticism of government actions in July of the previous year.
She condemned the use of force against citizens advocating for their rights and called on leaders to listen to the people’s grievances rather than suppressing them through force and arrogance.
Her remarks followed President Museveni’s warning to those planning an anti-corruption march to Parliament.
While Azawi’s bold stance on social issues was praised by some, Bebe Cool warns that taking a political approach could negatively affect her career.
