Tensions are rising in Kampala Central following the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) decision to deny a party ticket to long-time supporter Saudah Madaada. The move has prompted her to launch an independent bid for the position of Lord Councillor, citing alleged bias in the party’s vetting process.

NUP, led by Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), has started unveiling its endorsed candidates for the 2026 general elections. However, the ongoing internal vetting process is drawing criticism, with some party loyalists expressing frustration and disappointment.

One of those affected is Saudah Madaada, a well-known grassroots mobilizer and close ally of the late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, former MP for Kawempe North. Madaada had hoped to carry the NUP flag for the Kampala Central KCCA Lord Councillor seat but lost the ticket to Eva Kyazike.

Despite her strong track record within the party, Madaada was overlooked leading many to speculate that internal politics and favoritism may have played a role in the outcome.

Undeterred, Madaada officially filed her nomination papers earlier today as an independent candidate at the Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda.

She told reporters that the decision to run was encouraged by local voters who supported her candidacy and helped gather the required signatures.

“I am still loyal to NUP and support our presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi,” Madaada affirmed, even as she moves forward outside the party ticket.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has officially kicked off the nomination exercise for Local Government positions across the country today.

According to Jennifer Kyobutungi, the Kampala Regional Electoral Officer, the process is proceeding smoothly. Aspirants are required to present a proposer, a seconder, and a chief campaign agent as part of the nomination requirements.

The race for Kampala Central is now shaping up to be a closely watched contest, especially as internal rifts within NUP begin to surface ahead of the 2026 elections.
