Olympic Champion Joshua Cheptegei Publicly Endorses Museveni for 2026 Presidency

Ugandan Olympic gold medalist and world champion Joshua Cheptegei has officially declared his support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s re-election bid for the 2026–2031 term.

Cheptegei, who holds world records in both the 5,000m and 10,000m races, made the bold declaration during a massive rally in the Sebei Sub-region. Addressing cheering crowds in his native language, the star athlete passionately shouted, “NRM oyee, President Museveni oyee!”

The long-distance icon praised President Museveni’s leadership for bringing peace, security, and development to his region.

“We have peace in our area with no insurgencies like before. There’s development  we now have electricity, good tarmacked roads, and people can do business freely,” Cheptegei said.

The 10,000m Olympic champion also lauded the government’s commitment to sports development, highlighting projects such as the Teryet High Altitude Training Centre in Kapchorwa, which has become a key hub for Ugandan athletes.

Cheptegei further acknowledged ongoing sports infrastructure projects, including the Hoima City International Stadium, Akii Bua Stadium in Lira, and the redevelopment of Mandela National Stadium (Namboole).

President Museveni, who recently wrapped up his Sebei Sub-region campaign with major rallies in Kween and Kapchorwa, continues his 2026 campaign trail under the theme “Protecting the Gains.”

The next stop on his campaign trail is the Bukedi region, as the President continues to emphasize peace, security, development, and job creation ahead of the January 2026 general elections.
