Local musician Ali Buken better known as Nubian Li, has officially revealed his intention to run for the Nakawa Mayoral seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Although rumors had been circulating about Nubian Li’s interest in joining politics, the singer has now confirmed his political aspirations publicly.
A close associate of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, Nubian Li while announcing his political aspirations , stated that he has made the decision to follow in the footsteps of other musicians who have entered politics, such as Judith Babirye, Rachel Magola, Dr. Hilderman, and Khalifa Aganaga.
In a video shared on Instagram, the ‘Abalungi Balumya’ singer made the announcement during a burial ceremony over the weekend. He asked the mourners to support his political ambitions and emphasized the importance of qualifications and capability in seeking public office.
“Just as President Robert Kyagulanyi has said, if we are qualified and capable, we should pursue elective positions. I will be contesting for the Nakawa mayoral seat, and I kindly ask for your support when the time comes. May God bless you, and may He grant eternal peace to the deceased,” he expressed.
The singer also revealed that his decision to run for office was inspired by Bobi Wine, who, at Nubian Li’s 2021 wedding, shared that he would not have entered politics without Nubian Li’s encouragement.
Bobi Wine credited Nubian Li for motivating him to contest in the 2017 Kyadondo East by-election, which he won, and for urging him to run for president in 2021.
Having closely witnessed the triumphs and challenges of his friend Bobi Wine’s political journey, he will now put his own leadership abilities to the test as he embarks on this new political venture.
