Richard Todwong, Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has announced the passing of his brother, Maj. Patrick Opio Awany.
Todwong shared the tragic news on his X account, posting photos and expressing his sorrow. He praised his brother for his dedication to protecting and serving the nation diligently.
“I celebrate my brother, Maj. Opio Patrick Awany. Your dedication to protecting our country was your code, and you approached your duty with unmatched passion. You bravely faced countless battles in the Central African Republic, Eastern DRC, and Somalia,” Todwong posted.
Maj. Awany was killed in an attack in Somalia. According to sources, Al Shabaab planted an improvised explosive device (IED) that hit his convoy, killing him and injuring three other UPDF soldiers.
The attack occurred at 1:00 PM on Sunday between Buulo Nagad and Feel Wareego in Lower Shabelle, Somalia. The convoy was carrying logistics.
Details regarding Maj. Awany’s funeral and burial arrangements are currently scant, but updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Maj. Awany served in the motorized infantry brigade.
