The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has officially launched a nationwide campaign to renew and register National Identity Cards, marking a major step toward modernizing Uganda’s identification system.
Speaking at the launch event in Kampala, NIRA Executive Director Rosemary Kisembo announced that registration centers are now operational at the parish level across the country.
Kisembo emphasized that the campaign is about more than just renewing expired IDs. It’s part of a broader effort to build a more secure and advanced national ID infrastructure one that supports digital governance, increases access to financial services, and improves the delivery of public programs.
The mass registration exercise which began on Monday 27th May 2025 , will run through late November 2025, is expected to reach more than 15.8 million Ugandans.
This includes people with expired IDs, new applicants particularly youth turning 18 and anyone needing to update or correct their ID information.
To ensure smooth operations, over 5,300 biometric registration kits have been deployed across Uganda’s sub-counties.
