Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, Deputy Spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has alleged that his recent arrest was orchestrated by his political opponent, Michael Kabaziguruka the Nakawa East MP aspirant and chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom’s (PFF) Electoral Commission.

Mufumbiro made the claims earlier today while being escorted to Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kampala.

He was reportedly picked up by security operatives on Monday under unclear circumstances and has since been held incommunicado.

He appeared in court today alongside Sauda Masadda, a fellow NUP member and Kampala Central Woman Lord Councillor aspirant, who was arrested in Busia while allegedly attempting to cross into Kenya.

Both Mufumbiro and Masadda are facing charges including unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and other related offenses.

Their arrests come amid what observers describe as increasing pressure on opposition figures, particularly NUP members, ahead of the upcoming election season.

The party has long accused security forces of targeting its members through arbitrary arrests and abductions  tactics they claim are intended to intimidate dissent.

During the 2021 elections, numerous NUP supporters were reportedly abducted by unidentified security personnel. While some were later released without charges, others remain unaccounted for.

Security agencies have repeatedly denied these allegations, insisting that all operations and arrests are conducted within the framework of the law.
