Democratic Front (DF) president Mathias Mpuuga has denied online reports alleging that his party intends to endorse President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the 2026 general elections.
The clarification comes after a statement circulated on a fake DF X (formerly Twitter) account, claiming the party had withdrawn its support for Mubarak Munyagwa, the Common Man’s Party presidential candidate, in favor of the incumbent.
The false post alleged that DF’s supposed decision followed “extensive consultations” and a “review of the political environment,” suggesting that Munyagwa’s low popularity would hinder his chances of winning. It further claimed that backing Museveni would promote “national stability and progress.”
Mpuuga, however, dismissed the claims through his verified social media platforms, emphasizing that the DF leadership has not endorsed any presidential candidate and that the party’s position remains unchanged it will not support any contender in the 2026 polls.
“Our attention has been drawn to a message circulating online purporting to be from the Democratic Front endorsing certain presidential candidates. Please be advised that there has been no such announcement from the DF leadership,” Mpuuga clarified.
He further revealed that the X account behind the misinformation is fake and not affiliated with the Democratic Front, urging the public to ignore the fabricated message.
“The X handle from which the message originated is operated by individuals who have no connection to DF. Please treat it with the contempt it deserves and say no to misinformation and disinformation,” he cautioned.
The Democratic Front, a splinter group that broke away from the National Unity Platform (NUP), had earlier declared it would not field a presidential candidate in the 2026 elections
