David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Kampala Central MP aspirant, has stressed that effective leadership is not defined by fluent English or academic qualifications, but by the ability to genuinely connect with people and respond to their real-life struggles.

“Leadership isn’t about speaking good English. It’s about understanding people’s problems and offering real solutions that make a difference in their lives.”Rubongoya stated while appearing on NBS TV.

He pointed to the late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya as a powerful example. Despite his brief tenure in Parliament, Ssegirinya gained widespread respect for his dedication to serving ordinary Ugandans and staying closely connected to grassroots communities.

“The late Hon. Ssegirinya served only a short time, but many Ugandans still see him as a true leader,” Rubongoya said.

He further argued that educational qualifications and professional experience are meaningless if a leader is disconnected from the people.

“No matter how educated or experienced you are, if you’re out of touch with the ground, how do you expect NUP or the people to support you?” he asked.

Lewis Rubongoya’s remarks reflect NUP’s core belief in people-centered leadership, where meaningful service and grassroots engagement are prioritized over polished rhetoric and political image.
