Eddy Kenzo’s Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) is facing the closure of its offices at the National Theatre due to unpaid rent.
The Uganda National Cultural Centre, which manages the facility, has initiated steps to lock out UMA after nearly a year of rent arrears, with little indication of payment coming soon.
As a result, key offices including those of the UMA President and Secretary General have already been sealed off. This move has effectively left current leaders like Cindy Sanyu and Phina Masanyalaze without access to their workspaces and without clear roles.
In response, Eddy Kenzo, President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) and a presidential advisor on creative arts, has pledged to step in and help.
Kenzo acknowledged UMA’s contributions to the music industry before the formation of UNMF and emphasized that their legacy should not be dismissed.
“We will ensure the offices reopen. UMA has played a key role before us, and we can’t just let them go down like this, we’ll intervene and see how best to support them.”Kenzo said in an interview with a local television station. “
Notably, relations between UMA and UNMF especially between Cindy and Kenzo have been tense, with ongoing disputes over the leadership of Uganda’s music industry.
