Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, commonly known as Chairman Nyanzi and currently serving as Secretary for External Affairs in the National Unity Platform (NUP), has responded to growing internal criticism, addressing allegations of corruption, indiscipline, and factionalism within the party.

Speaking to a local blog outside NUP headquarters in Kavule, Kampala on Tuesday, Nyanzi elder brother to party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu explained that his recent absence from media appearances was intentional.

He described his silence as a strategic decision rather than a sign of weakness.

“I chose to stay silent not because I’m weak,Even in my silence, I am resisting attacks from critics who have nothing constructive to offer their constituents and instead focus on tarnishing my name.”Nyanzi said.

Nyanzi emphasized that his current priority is fulfilling his responsibilities in external affairs. These include mobilizing and recruiting international supporters, fundraising from foreign donors, and identifying capable candidates for NUP activities abroad.

However, internal party tensions surrounding Nyanzi are longstanding. Disputes date back to the “Kunga” recruitment campaign, where he clashed with NUP Deputy President for Buganda and former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga. Nyanzi accused Mpuuga of undermining the initiative, while Mpuuga argued the drive lacked coordination and involved “fake commanders.”

Further friction emerged from former Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebaggala Sengendo, who accused Nyanzi of behavior inconsistent with the party’s core values, including alleged interference in local mobilization efforts.

Analysts have warned that if these disputes persist, they could harm NUP’s public image and long-term cohesion.

Despite holding a key party position, Nyanzi continues to face serious allegations. In July 2025, NUP formed a committee to investigate claims that he extorted money from aspiring candidates—a repeat of similar accusations from the 2021 elections. He has also been dogged by previous allegations of sexual harassment and mismanagement of funds.

Compounding the controversy, Nyanzi was reportedly abducted in February 2025 by unknown armed individuals. After his release, he claimed to have been severely mistreated while in captivity.

His account stirred suspicion within NUP ranks, with some members accusing him of leaking sensitive information to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

His appointment to the External Affairs role has also drawn skepticism from the U.S.-based NUP diaspora. Critics there questioned both his qualifications in international diplomacy and his stewardship of funds during previous mobilization efforts.

As Nyanzi attempts to focus on his overseas responsibilities, questions about his leadership, credibility, and influence within the party remain unresolved.
